Robert Clerc Jewellery
Paddington, NSW
2016
This project is the amalgamation of two retail shops in Oxford Street, Paddington, to create a gallery space for the jeweller Robert Clerc, where he is able to display his smaller jewellery pieces alongside his large scale cast metal sculpture. His workshop is an integral element within the space, with the manufacture of the jewellery equally on display with the finished product.
The shops had been renovated many times over the years and were a rabbit warren of smaller spaces, back of house areas and a separate residential entry to the upper level. The brief was to combine them into one large open plan space. The structural party wall between the two had to be removed at the lower level and steel beams and columns inserted in it’s place. These new columns have become a key element in the space, with their polished stainless steel circular cladding forming sculptural counterpoints to Robert’s own sculptures.
New stainless steel shopfronts are a contemporary interpretation of the long lost Victorian originals, integrating display cases to match those set within the walls of the interior.
Travertine and polished stainless steel finishes have been selected to reflect the materials of fine jewellery.
